A few things that are making me happy this week and that I’m grateful for:
Positive Change in the World
Last Sunday I was grateful for Planned Parenthood’s amazing supporters. After the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation announced it would no longer fund cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood, supporters took to Facebook and Twitter to express their outrage and they walked the talk by flooding the health organization with more than enough donations to recoup the loss from Komen. It only got better this week when Komen’s senior vice president Karen Handel resigned and Komen restored its funding to Planned Parenthood.
When the department store JCPenny named Ellen DeGeneres its new spokesperson, the conservative group One Million Moms criticized the retailer for “jumping on the pro-gay bandwagon” and called for her replacement. The good news is that JCPenny stood by DeGeneres saying she represents the company’s values of treating all people fairly. DeGeneres addressed the controversy with her usual humor and grace.
A three-judge panel issued a 2-1 majority opinion ruling that California’s Proposition 8, which bans gays and lesbians from marrying, is unconstitutional. Judge Stephen Reinhardt and Judge Michael Hawkins stated that Proposition 8 “serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and dignity of gays and lesbians in California, and to officially reclassify their relationships and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples.”
Washington state lawmakers have passed a law approving gay marriage.
My Nieces and Nephew
I learned earlier this week that my sister’s children have never seen the original Star Wars trilogy. Shocking, I know. I immediately scheduled a movie marathon. They are now more educated.
He’s a tad nuts, an alcoholic, and not a very good listener, but sometimes the fog recedes a little and I catch a glimpse of what I imagine he might have been like once – funny, exuberant, engaging, and curious about the world.
Her performance at the Super Bowl Halftime Show was fantastic. “Like a Prayer” remains a favorite.
