Sunday Gratitudes

London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremonies

A few things that are making me happy this week and that I’m grateful for:

The Olympics

While NBC’s coverage of it is disappointing, I’m enjoying this awesome legacy from pagan antiquity. The Olympics Opening Ceremony was fantastic and I enjoyed watching the Parade of Nations and deciding that India, Mexico, San Marino, and Serbia were among the best dressed teams. My favorite part, however, remains the journey of torch and the lighting of the cauldron.

Being Nice Online

Every week there are new developments in the world of social media. For some time now, writers such as Stephen Marche have speculated on whether social networking sites make us lonelier and more disconnected from other human beings. Other writes explore cruelty on the internet and how anonymity leads to dehumanization. As someone who works over the internet and plays on it under her real name and face, I was pleased to see this week two articles on efforts to end the anonymous cruelty online and make us nice again or, at least, accountable. As I said to a friend via Facebook this week, I wouldn’t be deliberately cruel or rude to you in person, over the phone, or via email, so why would I behave poorly towards you on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, or any other social media site?

Support

I’m so grateful for the love and support that I receive from my family, partner, and friends. Sometimes support comes from unexpected sources too and I’m grateful for that as well.

Man of Steel

It’s not much, but the new trailer for the Superman reboot Man of Steel is enough to get me all excited about the release next June. There are two trailers with the same images, but different voice-overs. One is with Russell Crowe who plays Jor-El, Superman’s biological father, and the other is with Kevin Costner who plays Jonathan Kent.

What’s making you happy this week?
